Tito's Tent.
Thoughts: Levites are Jewish males who claim patrilineal descent from the Tribe of Levi. The Tribe of Levi descended from Levi, the third son of Jacob and Leah. The Tribe of Levi served particular religious duties for the Israelites and had political (administering cities of refuge) and educational responsibilities as well. In return, the landed tribes were expected to support the Levites with a tithe, particularly the tithe known as the First tithe, ma'aser rishon. The Kohanim, a subset of the Levites, were the priests, who performed the work of holiness in the Temple. The Levites, referring to those who were not Kohanim, were specifically assigned to: Singing and/or playing music in the Temple, serving as guards, and carrying. In modern times, Levites are integrated in Jewish communities, and the total percentage of Levites among the wider Jewish population is about 4%.
Hard to know which band is which, as more than one group appear to use this name. The ACL website provides no information about the band, but I think this is a gospel band and not the session band from New Zealand, the Jewish soulful choir group, or the Filipino "all-priest band." But I can't know for sure. In the event that I know what I am talking about, this is a rap/soul/gospel thing from the Austin area with a front man named Shedrach Rowry. Here is one track I could find on YouTube:

Spotify has loaded up two albums of tunes that you can enjoy from these folks. 2013's Rescued is their own album, and then 2015's Broken to Minister is an album by Damien Sneed that is "featuring" the Levites. Only two songs have more than 1,000 listens. Here is a YouTube track that I was able to find - there aren't too many for them - a live tune called "God You Are"
So many people singing. You've got at least 6 people jamming their damn lungs out up there. Wailing that stuff out. Kind of stressful. They break it down later in that 8 minute long video, which is kind of cool, but its still a lot going on. If you are up at noon on Sunday, then by all means, go get this in your system.

Thoughts: I guess there are only so many gospel groups you can get for the ACL experience, because this one is also recycled. Here is my 2014 view. Here is the 2015 one. They also have a website if you want to check that out.
One album available on Spotify - 2015's Working in the Vineyard. The picture on the cover of this album is a little deceiving, being that an electric guitar is pictured, and yet the vast majority of the instrumentation on this album sounds like it comes from the Casio I had when I was 9. Lots of vocals though, so you'll get your money's worth in the sound department anyway. Only two tracks have any registered listens on Spotify. The top track is the title track, with all of 3,954 streams (up from 2,900 last year! Killing it!).
FYI, that sounds nothing like the studio version, which is entirely made up of synth sounds and maybe a touch of guitar that is washed out under the drum track. Here is a video from 2014's ACL, which isn't titled, but I am going to decide is called "Hold On"
Great voices, nice backing music. Not my thing, but I can respect the fact that they are doing it well. A more recent video has been uploaded to YouTube, so here, try out "It's Alright."

Thoughts: The guy's voice is great, but damn if his songs aren't cheesy as hell. Love songs, so many love songs. His top seven most popular songs on Spotify have the word "love" in their title. And they're sweet! His love song about his momma is lovely! But also a deep dish slice of cheesy glop. Like, he's singing about "holding back the moon, in case you want a little more afternoon."
And then, in an even more strange development, he has TWO albums of pep talks. 2021's MAJOR.HOPE Motivations and 2022's MAJOR.HOPE Pep Talks. Literally, some basic music in the background, but with him intoning something to encourage the listener. Like "You're doing too much with your amazing self. No one like to hear that, but if its truth, honor it and fix it." Ten tracks of him speaking advice to you. SO weird. What the hell. He also has a 2019 album of he and his friends reading? What a weirdo. His last album of actual music was 2018's Even More, which followed his 2016 debut called I Am MAJOR.
Top track is from that debut album - "Why I Love You," with 28.9 million streams.
I don't do much in the way of soft R&B, but this makes me think of John Legend, or at least my mental image of John Legend. It is very sweet and nice. It is also very treacly and cheeseball. The other hits don't get much better - the second biggest tune is from the 2018 album, "Better With You In It." 3.2 million streams (so, a major fall-off after that one hit from seven years ago).
Oh, hey, a love song for once! He is definitely biting Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" in the tune to that song.
Born in Denton, raised in Houston, he is a Grammy nominated singer who has been classically trained at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston and then the Berklee College of Music. Stevie Wonder called "Why I Love You" the "wedding song of the year." He just recently released a new EP - 2023's The Hope of My Soul, and it is more of the same. The first song has "love" in the title. I think I'm good on this guy! He's got a great voice, but I am good on the supercharged love anthems and motivational speeches.

Thoughts: Another deeply weird addition to this poster right here. Wedged between a bunch of Nashville acolytes hollering about beer and hot chicks and red dirt, you get one of the Queens of R&B and gospel wandering in here. 83 years old! She was part of the Staples Singers, and since then has collaborated with everyone from Ray Charles to Prince to David Byrne to Hozier to Aretha Franklin to Arcade Fire to Van Morrison to Dan Auerbach to Bob Dylan. She has a freaking Grammy Lifetime Achievement award, for crying out loud. One of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, per Rolling Stone. In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A Kennedy Center Honoree. Gospel Hall of Fame and Blues Hall of Fame, respectively. She is legitimately a huge act, and yet she's tucked among the Clay Walkers and Tracy Byrds in some weird world.
So, obviously, she got started with the family band, The Staples Singers. If you don't immediately recognize the name, you absolutely know some of their top songs. They originally were performing at churches and a local radio show in Chicago, before they scored a hit in 1956 with "Uncloudy Day." That old album absolutely sounds like a gospel family band, recorded in a shed somewhere. After a handful of gospel and cover albums of folk songs (?!?), they became the soundtrack for the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s with several of those folky tunes, like "For What It's Worth," "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall," and "The Weight." They hit the top forty eight times in this stage, including two number ones. "I'll Take You There" is the top one of those, released in 1972, and rolling up 135.1 million streams since then.
Absolutely classic. And it has been used in countless movies, commercials, samples, shows, and everything else since then. Rolling Stone ranked it as the 276th best song of all time. That funky groove in the back is money in the bank. "Let's Do It Again" was their other top hit.
Her 1969 solo debut is a powerfully sung mix of soul and R&B songs, and it doesn't appear that she wrote any of them. It's the immediately recognizable tunes that have the most streams - "Son of a Preacher Man," "You Send Me," and "A House is Not a Home." It is a really nice album - solid musicianship behind her and a voice that is immediately noticeable. 1970's Only for the Lonely has a great cover, with a closeup on her eye with a teardrop rolling down her face. That album also boasts her top streamer until her later career renaissance, with "I Have Learned to Do Without You." 3.8 million streams.
Rolling along with that bass line and those strings, this is a lovely one that again showcases her voice. Big gap after that one, until 1979's Oh What a Feeling, which has more of a disco flair than the first two albums, it is pretty groovy! Then another ten year break before 1989's Time Waits for No One, which legit has no streams. Two tracks have barely over 1,000, and the others have no listed streams. Weird. After that, a few albums of religious songs (and also, it looks like some of her albums are not on Spotify, likely some label issues or something) before some more gospel/civil rights tunes. In the midst of that, she sang the theme song for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Nice! In my opinion, her resurgence happened in 2010 with You Are Not Alone, when she kind of leaned into the elder Stateswoman of soul thing. She won the Best Americana Album Grammy with that album, which was a product of a collaboration with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. It has a little bit of the Americana rootsy sound of Wilco, but with Staples' weathered voice on top. The top tune is the title song, with 4.4 million streams.
Lovely, right? After this one, she did another album with Tweedy on the instruments again, 2013's One True Vine, which ended up as her highest charting album. The top tune on there is great, funky and soulful while sounding like something from a Wilco and Black Keys influenced band. "Can You Get to That." Just over 2 million streams.
[Deepest voice of all time except for the Oak Ridge Boys]: "I wanna know." Next, she shifted her indie rockers and worked with M. Ward on 2016's Livin' on a High Note. A good album - very enjoyable tunes and her voice is still nice (even if not as powerful as it once was). She apparently wasn't into it though, and went back to Tweedy for 2017's If All I Was Was Black. Then she must have thought better about Tweedy, because she hooked up with Ben Harper for 2019's We Get By. Most of the songs on these albums are chill, a little slight funkiness to them, but mostly relaxed Adult Alternative type tunes. And they are very good - I don't know of another 83-year old former R&B/soul/gospel singer who is out here making music like this right now. Dolly is 75, but she is still generally doing country stuff. Same with Willie. Finally, Mavis put out Carry Me Home, with Levon Helm (of the Band) on every song.
We'll see how the schedule shakes out, as I have to see Clay Walker over anyone but Tyler on this day, but if I could see Staples do her thing, I'd love to witness it in person.

Hard to tell sometimes with the gospel groups because they appear to use the same names as others in different regions of the country. I dig the coordinated jackets. Here is some more, with "Praisin' Time."
Feel the funk on that one. Don't fret that they are wearing the same outfits in both videos, the videos are just scrolling photos. I don't find anything new from these ladies.

Thoughts: Hey! A gospel group! Oh, hey, and they're on Spotify as well!
From the cover of the album, this is six grown men and two small boys, who are all dressed up to be the groomsmen in someone's wedding, and ready to harmonize their way into heaven. Eight songs on their album - 2007's Keeping the Faith - and only one of them passes the 1,000 stream mark. That is the opening track on the album, "Love Is," with 4,219 streams.
Honestly? Sounds pretty nice. Good voices, cheesy synths, tight rhythm section. "pick 'em up! That's love!" Their ACL bio from past years is like four sentences, and really doesn't help explain who they are, except that it called them a quartet, and since there are nine people in their photo, I think we can assume that they don't do well at math. Although the small children aren't in this video, I am assuming this is the same thing. The video is just called Shields of Faith / San Antonio, TX, so I can't tell you the song name or anything. Also, it sounds like the microphone has been submerged in a can of baked beans that is being held in a time machine that is going backwards at one second per hour.

Thoughts: Aw man, I got caught in the same trap again as 2015, thinking that this was going to be the sweet Christian rap group that is available on Spotify. Here is my 2015 review, that just made me laugh out loud all over again. But I did just get to jam "To Da Dome" again, and it still rulez. According to the ACL bio page, the actual Disciples of Christ that we will be hearing is a Houston, Texas gospel group made up of four lovely ladies. Searching for these folks on YouTube brings you to some interesting stuff. Here is a band called Disciples of Christ, who I am pretty sure is not a Houston gospel group.
That kind of stuff makes me giggle. Who really wants to hear any of that? BBBBBWWWAAAAAAAA!!!! GGWWAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! Gggrrr gggrgggglll nnnrrggrggddd!!! The band's "full set" is 13 minutes. Killing it! The majority of other music on YouTube for this band name is the rap group mentioned above. But here is another band using the name, who appears to be singing in a non-English language. French maybe?
Ah, wait, now I see. You have to search for Disciples of Christ Houston. They really should look into one of the other infinite names out there that have yet to be claimed by multiple other bands.
Here's a little action from the Stubb's BBQ stage - I assume this is part of the gospel brunch thing they do on Sundays. The person shooting this video is using what I call "Puke Mode" on the camera, wiggling the hell out of it and coming in for random close ups. Just set the phone on the table and prop it up and let her roll, man. How about one more, blaring it out at a church in Houston. Also filmed on puke mode.
But, regarding the tunes, they've got nice voices and can harmonize well. I won't be there at 11:45 on Saturday to see them, but go knock yourself out.

Thoughts: This is one of those groups that uses a name that might have been used repeatedly over time. There was an old Motown gospel band with this name, that has a popular song from 1960 called "Behold the Saints of God," with 54k streams on Spotify. That group is marked by a strong voiced pack of female vocalists. But then there is also a band of dudes in all blue suits who put out a pretty bad album in 2003 (Bound for Glory), with less than a thousand streams for every song. From what I can tell, neither of those bands is actually the one that will be here in the Fall. The ACL bio seems to point to an entirely different group that is based here in Austin. So, here is their most watched video on YouTube, at just over 3k views.
Light on instrumentation, heavy on harmonies. If you need to atone for what you did during the first weekend, then go get this one and find Jesus.

Oh, you know what, now I recognize this band. That is amazing - my brain is so full of garbage that is unnecessary to my survival. These guys were here a few years ago, I'd remember that weird look - strange glasses, bowtie, and t-shirt - anywhere. Like he's trying to be CeeLo. But from looking back at my old posts, they used to be called Tyrell Morris & Hearts of Worship. Gospel isn't my thing, but the groove in that song is something you can't deny. Almost 10,000 views on YouTube, so there isn't a huge following out there for this group yet. But they sound great to me. Well, I could do without him telling me to get my swag on. But otherwise, okey doke. How about another one? Called "So I..."
Oh, well, now we found autotune. And Kanye West. More of a rap groove. Not as good as the old tune. But the backup singers are legit. The group is from Denver, and according to the website, they are touring the country melding "Gospel, Hip-Hop, R&B, Retro-Funk, Jazz and nuances of Neo-Soul into an electrifying performance that is engaging, uninhibited and life-giving." Keep on doing it, man. You can do it without me at that early time slot, but go right ahead.

Thoughts: These guys came last year as well, but then they were called Pastor Cedric B. West and The Relatives. No new music since then, so I'm just going to give you the same review from last time. Thoughts: Back in that gospel zone of the poster (as though the band name didn't tip you off). Although the name doesn't quite match, I just found that this stuff is available on Spotify - just called The Relatives. And some of these songs are actually hugely popular! Well, at least for the gospel people who usually play ACL, they have a song with more than 639,000 streams (up to 735k in 2018)! I mean, that is legit! From their 2009 anthology of tunes, here is "Don't Let Me Fall."
Their Spotify bio shows that they have opened for the Staples Singers. That is pretty big time. I usually come to these gospel reviews planning to make some sort of joke, do a quick review, and move on. But these guys really look like the real deal. Come on and check this next one out, called "It's Coming Up Again," which has 310k streams (up to 470k in 2018), and sounds as funky as James Brown bringing the damn thunder right up to your door right now.
Interesting thing, that song sounded really familiar, and it looks like it was featured on season 1 of Fargo, the show I literally just finished watching earlier this week. Serendipity, man. AND THAT SONG IS DOPE! If you don't do some Bill Cosby-esque head shakes and groove around in your seat while listening to that track, then don't read anything ever again. Just go crawl into a coffin and go away already. For my money, that 2013 album, The Electric Word, which was produced by a guy from Spoon, is the top pick for these cats. They have a 2016 album called Goodbye World that is pretty good too, but not as funky to me. Then, the 2009 Don't Let Me Fall anthology album is more gospel-centric and less exciting to me. Surprisingly loving these guys though. That'll teach me to generalize the gospel bands! Get your buns outta bed and go get funky on Sunday morning!

Thoughts: Only one song available on Spotify, "Stop Right Now," that boasts a whopping 3,519 streams so far. Honestly, its pretty good. Layered harmonies and little to no accompaniment leads to a pretty cool, traditional, soulful, bluesy doo-wop sound that I can get behind. This version isn't quite the same as the one on Spotify, but its as close as I could figure out with a minimum amount of work.
If you want to find out more about this group, here is a legit interesting article about the group (or at least a group by this name) that describes an interesting history of this band that is apparently from Austin. I will not be to the park by 11:45 on Saturday morning, so enjoy without me!

The picture on the cover of this album is a little deceiving, being that an electric guitar is pictured, and yet the vast majority of the instrumentation on this album sounds like it comes from the Casio I had when I was 9. Lots of vocals though, so you'll get your money's worth in the sound department anyway. Only the opening track, which is also the album title track, has more than a thousand streams on Spotify (1,947), so here you go.
FYI, that sounds nothing like the studio version, which is entirely made up of synth sounds and maybe a touch of guitar that is washed out under the drum track. Here is a video from 2014's ACL, which isn't titled, but I am going to decide is called "Hold On"
