One Liner: Real-deal guitar-slinging blues
Poster Position: Level 3 (15)
Weekend One Only.
Saturday.
Thoughts: Always sort of fascinating to see someone make carbon copy music in a classic, niche style. Like Billy Strings making old school bluegrass. This dude is making real deal, spot-on southern guitar blues that sounds like it could have been plucked from Muddy Waters catalog.
He's 24 now, but he was making a name for himself as a teenager. He learned the guitar from an arts and education program at the Delta Blues Museum in his hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi, and one of his instructors gave him the nickname Kingfish after a character in the Amos n Andy show. This is a funny quote, about conversations with friends about being into old school music: " "Man you young but you listen to that old, sad stuff." I'm like, "Man, I ain't really like that, I'm listening more for a culture thing, you know? This is history. This birthed what you guys listen to today, because you know rap is nothing but the blues' grandchild." " He's performed at lots of festivals, played for the Obamas at the White House, appeared on the TV show Luke Cage, and won a Grammy award.
The thing here is that he's got a great voice, in addition to being a whiz on the guitar. Whole package. Two albums, 2019's Kingfish and 2021's 662. I've been just letting this roll on for two days while I work, and it's really solid stuff. Top track is "Been Here Before," from the debut album, with 5.4 million streams.
