ACL 2022: Sunday, Weekend Two: Schedule and Thoughts

Sunday baby!  Sunday can be tough - if you've been going hard for two straight days already, it can be hard to get up and moving with the same verve and excitement as the past two days.  And that is especially true when the schedule is packed and you need to get there for something first thing.  A few years back, we were there right when the gates opened so that we could catch cleopatrick's set.  Which was soooooo hot.  And supremely awesome as well.  They rule.  I might just have to pull one of those days again here to see if Taipei Houston is as good as I think it could be...

A few prelude thoughts for Sunday:

  • The comments for each band are those "One Liner" things that I added to my reviews. It helps me to remember who they are (sometimes) and provides some detail on the kind of music they play.  Every once in a while they make me giggle too.
    • Honestly, sometimes those one liners are freaking hard to write.  Some of this music is super crazy forgettable and I just can't come up with anything useful to write.  "uhhh, another R&B lady with a pretty voice?"
  • WHAT I GOT YOU GOTTA GIVE IT TO YO MAMA
  • I've made each band name a link so that you can go read the full review and listen to some tunes if you are unswayed by the One Liner.
  • This may be the most packed day for bands that I actually want to be able to see.  Lots of the best headliners and almost headliners are set up for this day, as I'd love to see the Chilis, Kacey, Spoon, Goose, Marcus Mumford, Paramore, and Japanese Breakfast, but I won't be able to do it all!
  • Is it weird to anyone else that there is only one gospel band playing on Sunday?  Shouldn't the point of naming a handful of gospel bands to the lineup be that they'll play for a Sunday morning crowd of sinners?

Playlist!

Here we go:

11:45

Miller Lite
Flora & Fawna: this just made me re-watch that scene in Napoleon Dynamite where Napoleon first meets LaFawnda, and it is amazing
BMI
Siena LigginsEntirely forgettable pop R&B singing
Barton Springs
Pleasure Venom: Breakneck local punk thing
 Tito's
The Spiritualettes: Gospel
T-Mobile
Danielle Ponder: Killer-voiced former lawyer channels Aretha and Yola

Ponder, for sure.  I liked the Pleasure Venom thing too, but I really admire her voice and sound.

They just added Flora & Fawna, so they might be super good, but it will take a me a minute to go write up a review now that I have noticed them.

12:30/12:45
Honda
Taipei Houston: Sons of Metallica's Lars Ulrich, doing a Royal Blood-esque two man blast
Tito's (12:45)
Me ND Adam: Trashwave from some local dudes
Kiddie (12:30)
Alphabet Rockers: Positive kiddie raps
American Express
Glove: 80's mopey new wave redux tunes

Taipei Houston is not only a good curiosity, because of their famous dad, but also more up my alley than the awful trashwave thing or more 80's regurgitation.  Although 12:30 sure seems early on a Sunday!  I wish they could have gotten a later slot.

1:15
Miller Lite
Jake Wesley Rogers: Pretty piano pop from a dude with a major change in his look
BMI
Joshua Ray Walker: "baby-faced, 6XL guitar hero with a Dwight Yoakum voice."
Barton Springs
Tom Odell: Brit piano-playing singer with one mega hit (and a sound kinda like the New Radicals)
T-Mobile
DEHD: Surf-y indie rock that sounds like lost 80's New Wave

This is a really solid hour here in weekend two.  First choice is Joshua Ray Walker, I really want to check him out.  Great songwriter and excellent voice.  But even if country isn't your thing, both Rogers and Odell have a good sound and nice voices.  I have a friend who likes DEHD a lot, so I may peek over there.  But pretty open competition here.

2:00
Honda
Larry June: Chilled out rapper from the Bay Area
Tito's (1:45)
Buffalo Nichols: Rootsy bluesman with all the right notes
American Express
Yungblud: Dance rock slash Machine Gun Kelly thing with lyrics built to shock.

Larry June was my automatic response, I think he is really good.  With so few rappers on the bill this year, you've got to take what you can get here.  But also, I think Buffalo is talented as well.  No thanks on Yungblud.  I've tried him before and was unimpressed.  Unless you are very into seeing a man's tongue.  That part was impressive, just how many times he felt the need to stick it out.

3:00
Miller Lite (3:15)
BIA: Lady rapper who leans in to her name's Lil Jon relation.
BMI
Urban Heat: Local group making dark synth pop for the goth kids who want more 80's
Barton Springs
Faye Webster: Americana singing photographer leaning towards R&B sometimes
T-Mobile
Pinkpantheress:   electro pop with a squeaky Brit
Titos (2:45)                             Wilderado: Genuinely great rock and roll AND a cool name.

Wilderado for sure.  I'm sad they aren't playing weekend one.  But also, Faye Webster has a really great, gentle sound, and BIA could be fun if you are in to the brash lady rapper thing.

4:00
Honda
Spoon: Austin's finest rock and roll band
Tito’s Tent
Magdalena Bay: More synth pop that loves the 80's and the Eilish bedroom pop sound.
American Express
Oliver Tree: Weird ass rapper with terrible hair and bad sunglasses

A million times over I'd choose Spoon here.  Not only because they are great and I need to see them play live, but also because Oliver Tree is awful and Magdalena is not good.  Seriously, I know that the world loves some attention-grabbing weirdness - purposefully ugly clothes and haircut, dopey but catchy lyrics - a whole freaky package.  But I can't stand Tree.  I'm sure he'll be the top artist in the Chronicle's review of the day.

5:00
Miller Lite
Big Wild: Electronic chill music for your next terrible mixtape
BMI
Jackson Dean: Nothin' but Country from the kid who went viral with the National Anthem
Barton Springs
The Marias: dime store Billie Eilish bedroom pop with that "Hush" song.
T-Mobile
Japanese Breakfast: Great melodic indie rock to go with thoughts of sushi pancakes

Japanese Breakfast is my choice.  Breakfast is great and I've never gotten to see her before.  I could also be talked into the Marias, but I also think I'd just be sad the whole time.

6:00
Honda
James Blake: Falsetto-singing, glitchy-electronic R&B Brit
Tito’s Tent
Robert Glasper: Killer piano player who collaborates well
American Express
Paramore: Pop punk and emo heroes coming back for another round

Paramore is my choice for sure, but I genuinely think I would enjoy Glasper as he rips up that little Tito's tent, as there is no way you could contain that much power into a tent.  Nope on Blake for me.

7:00
Miller Lite
Zhu: EDM that is more clean, house music for dancing not hard thrashing
Barton Springs
Goose: Jam band goofy goodness
T-Mobile
Marcus Mumford: Mumford without the Sons

This is a bummer.  I'd really like to check out Goose, but I'd also dig the solo stuff of Mumford.  They've been playing one of Mumford's new tunes on the radio recently - I think called "Grace" - and it sounds great.  If pressured to choose right now, I'd want Goose to try out a new thing, but I'm bummed.  Wish one of those was on Saturday night against the headliners over there.

HEADLINERS:
Honda (8:15)
Kacey Musgraves: Bad ass country chick with legit lyrics and cool sound
Tito's
American Express
Red Hot Chili Peppers: One of the greatest rock bands ever (IMO), and boasts the prime time funk of Flea.

Another bummer, this is definitely the best lineup day, and while I have seen both of these artists multiple times, I'd never miss out on another chance to see the Chilis again.  And I love Spacey Kacey.  I'd absolutely love to see her play again.  So you really can't go wrong here, I just have to see the Chilis more.  And while I know they are going to lean on recent songs, I so very much wish that they'd dive deep into the catalog for me.  I should tweet at Flea.

ACL 2018: Second Weekend: Sunday Thoughts [EDIT]

Oh, man.  Major shakeup.  What a cluster.  Child Ass Gambino has jacked all of this up, angered the whole world, put C3 in an impossible spot, and shuffled the schedules.  This day loses Gambino, but gets St. Vincent and Travis Scott.  Obviously, there are still good things on this day, but when you lose the #3 thing on the whole poster, with only two weeks before the show, things get messed up.

This day already suffered from having very little that felt MUST SEE to me, but with a little shuffling, there's actually at least one improvement (getting St. Vincent moved to this day helps).  Still weird to me that McCartney isn't closing down the weekend...

Because I'll have already seen a bunch of these bands on first weekend, I may be more willing to be experimental here and try out other weird things.  We'll see.

As I did last year, I'm not going to try to list everyone in order of how much I like them, because it honestly provides no good information for you to know that Houndmouth is better than Rezz in my mind.  What really matters, to me at least, is how to navigate the hard conflicts and figure out who to see in each time slot.  So, here we go again.

A few prelude thoughts:

  • The comments for each band are those "One Liner" things that I added to my reviews. It helps me to remember who they are (sometimes) and provides some detail on the kind of music they play.
  • I've made each band name a link so that you can go read the full review and listen to some tunes if you are unswayed by the One Liner.
  • The first column in each box is the stage where the band is playing (in case you thought I was just playing a weird word association game).
Here is a playlist of my suggested tunes for Sunday.

Here we go.

11:15 or 11:30
Miller Lite
NOTHING
Barton Springs
Kydd Jones: Local rapper with pretty good beats and OK lyrics
Tito’s (11:15)
BMI
Davie: Alternative R&B guy with a nice voice but boring songs.
Home Away
Lemaitre: Electronic happy tunes in the neighborhood of Justice

Wait, where did Freya Ridings go?  Was that actually Child Ass Gambino in red-headed drag this whole time?  Crap, looks like she’s been dropped from the ACL website.  That was going to be my only suggestion for this hour.  Now, uhhhhh, I guess, if you’re there, go see Lemaitre?  (not a strong endorsement)

12:15 to 1:00
Honda
Thunderpussy: I can't say their name without grinning, but they kind of freaking rock.
Kiddie Limits  (12:30)
School of Rock: Kids jamming cover tunes based on what they learned at private lessons
Tito’s Tent
Superfonicos: Funky afro-funk from south of the border
American Express
Amber Mark: Soul pop and R&B like Norah Jones tried to make modern pop

Yeah, I guess I’d do Thunderpussy.  As usual, it likely doesn’t matter who is playing this early on a Sunday, but I think if I went, I’d give them a shot in this hour.

1:00 to 2:00
Miller Lite
Amen Dunes:  Great indie rock tunes by a weirdo who doesn't listen to music.
Barton Springs
Mt. Joy:  Pleasantly anonymous indie rock with good lyrics
Tito’s (1:15)
Ghost of Paul Revere:  Banjofied Americana and Harmonic Folk (with a big ginger beard!).
BMI
Phil Cook: Jam-ish goofball does freak folk well
Home Away
Yungblud:  Highly fun dance/electronic rock with lyrics built to shock.

This is a tough hour.  I know that none of these are household name bands, but I like all five of these bands.  So it will just come down to what are you looking to hear at this time of the day?  Yungblud likely has the potential to be the most famous/exciting out of this pack, with his dance-ready, exciting tunes and shocking lyrics.  Amen Dunes is probably the most talented of the bunch.  And the other three would be great for a nice sunny afternoon relaxation session with a cold beer in hand.  If I’m there, I think I might get hyped and do Yungblud, but Amen Dunes is also calling my name.  Might depend on what I did the first weekend.

[EDIT]  Yungblud was insane first weekend.  He might have been lip syncing, or at the very least was definitely using a backing track, but he was wild and crazy and extremely fun to watch.  Just know that you will get approximately 300 F- Bombs and 600 tongue thrusts.

2:00 to 3:00
Honda
A R I Z O N A:  Generic electro-rock tunes of platitude lyrics but a genius band name.
Kiddie Limits  (2:30)
Q Brothers:  The worst Kiddie Limits band
Tito’s Tent (2:15)
Flor De Toloache:  Mariachi ladies
American Express
Twin Shadow:  Sweepingly bombastic 80's synth pop

Yikes.  This hour is not great.  It’s too bad that some of the one o’clock guys couldn’t just slide over into this slot.  I’m not going to be one of those ironic dingbats that goes to watch mariachi to be funny (but disrespectful).  So, I’m left with generic and platitude-filled electro rock, or 80’s synth pop rock.  Ugggghhhh.  I guess I’ll pick A R I Z O N A, based solely on the fact that I met someone the other day who likes them?  But I refuse to highlight any of these guys, because its just not great.

I’ll tell you one thing I’d rather die than do, and that is go to the Q Brothers.

[EDIT]  Everything is hell now.  My buddy Joseph sent me a file of his sons making a rap with the Q Brothers that is actually very cool.  And Twin Shadow was terrible.  So I guess I'll give ARIZONA a shot next time, or go take a nap.

3:00
Miller Lite
Bahamas:   Sweet folky rock that brings Jack Johnson to mind.
Barton Springs
Parquet Courts:   Brooklyn garage rock fully loved by the critics
BMI
B.A.G. (Blimes xGifted Gab): Kick ass (for their single song, at least) women rappers
Home Away
Elle King:   The Ex's and Oh's lady has more scratchy-voiced, country-spiked pop.

Elle King is likely the most famous of the group, although she is probably the one I would want to see the least.  Parquet Courts’ brand of funky indie rock would probably be my pick, although that one BAG song is super good.

[EDIT] sent the wife and kids to Elle King while I did Injury Reserve on first weekend, and it was a good choice.  I'll hopefully go see Parquet this weekend.

4:00 – 5:00
Honda
X Ambassadors:   Sweepingly homogeneous alternative rock
Kiddie Limits  (4:30)
Saul Paul: Acoustic hip hop (but also real beats) for the Kiddies
Tito’s Tent
Moses Sumney: Quiet, pretty, soulful guy with amazingly beautiful voice who bores me
American Express
Janelle Monae:   Funky, freaky bad ass melting styles into great pop soul grooves.

Janelle Monae is the easy choice in this slot.  Sumney is lovely, but boring, while Monae is highly exciting and should be a true star.  I don’t want to see the Ambassadors at all, which likely means that both my kids and my buddy are going to demand that one both weekends.  I need to start a smear campaign now.

[EDIT] Monae was freaking amazing.  She is a hell of a show woman, with loads of dancing, a great voice, multiple costume changes, and a real-deal show crafted for maximum enjoyment.  I actually tried to get my son to let me take him to X Ambassadors, going completely against my prior statement up above, but all of my children were being such massive annoyances that I couldn't do that to the wife.  No regrets though.  You should do this show, and get close.

5:00
Miller Lite
Tinashe:   Strong-voiced hook singer making bad, generic pop R&B
Barton Springs
Houndmouth: Shaggy southern rock goodness.
BMI
The Sisterhood Band: Country-ish acoustic ladies that get on my nerves
Home Away
Rezz:   Aggressive electronic "body" music

Easiest decision of the day, I think.  Houndmouth is the only band I want to see of these four.  If only the female hadn't left Houndmouth, then this could have been an all female singer hour.

6:00
Honda
Shawn Mendes: Former Canadian vine star turned pop star (sound familiar?)
Tito’s Tent
The Revolution:  Prince's backing band, carrying on without him.
American Express
Vince Staples: Great flow from an odd rapper with critical love

Interesting hour.  On the one hand, I’d kind of like to see the pop star with all the big hits.  On the other hand, I’d love to sing along to Prince’s hits.  On the third hand, which is weird unless this is talking about a character in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Vince Staples is great and would likely be a fun rap show.  I think I lean Mendes, but I’m not convinced.

[EDIT] I heard great things about the Revolution.  I did Camila Cabello with the kids, and then left the park, but two different people said that the Revolution was a blast.

7:00
Miller Lite
Illenium:  More entirely generic EDM with the usual female singing platitudes
Barton Springs
Shakey Graves:  Excellent local musician and songwriter doing bluesy rock
Home Away
St. Vincent: Quirky electro-indie rock

Well, this certain changes things.  Before the change to add St. Vincent to this hour (and day), this was an easy choice for me to go see Graves.  But St. Vincent is legit, and she is supposed to put on a good show, so I’m not sure what to do here.  I’d say at this moment, since I am currently listening to St. Vincent just for the pleasure of it, I might choose her.

8:00 or 8:45
Honda
Arctic Monkeys: Fabulous rock and rollers with a recent lounge act bomb
Tito’s Tent
Silent Disco:
American Express (8:45)
Travis Scott:  Auto-Tuned/half-sung Houston rapper with an attitude problem

Theoretically, you could do both of these, from afar.  Since they start 45 minutes apart, you could go listen to 30 minutes of the Monkeys and then trudge all the way over to the other side of the park to Travis Scott mangle words and generally disappoint the world.  I'd rather try out the full set from AM.  I guess, at the very least, I’ll wander over there once the Monkeys are done to hear Scott's last few songs from afar.

ACL 2018: First Weekend: Sunday Thoughts [EDIT]

I know I've been complaining for months about not getting to do the first weekend of ACL, but I actually get to do the Sunday of the first weekend.  Sadly, in my opinion, it is the weaker day of the three.  BUT, there are still a bunch of good bands on the schedule for today, its just not quite so jam packed as Friday.  And nothing on here is truly MUST SEE for me, personally.  Still weird to me that McCartney isn't closing down the weekend...

But, since I'm taking the kids (and a friend with his teenager), my selections may not end up actually being the kinds of bands I would normally choose, were it only me going to the show.  Such is the way with life.  I'm still extremely excited to get to show my wife and kids more of the ACL experience, and to spend a day in the park with one of my oldest friends.  Should be a good time.  And not having hard desires makes it easier to go with the flow on shows other people really care about.

[EDIT] although, now, with Gambino out, this day really loses some luster.  The six o'clock hour turns into a chance for the whole world to go see Prince's old backing band.  Which is cool, but also a major bummer for all the folks who bought tickets today to see Gambino do his thing.

  • The first column in each box is the stage where the band is playing (in case you thought I was just playing a weird word association game).
Here is a playlist of my suggested tunes for Sunday.

Here we go.

11:30 to 12:15
Miller Lite
Wilderado: Genuinely great rock and roll AND a cool name.
Barton Springs
Sailor Poon: Raw lyrics over raw rock, if their name didn't rule they'd still be in their garage
Tito’s (11:15)
The Relatives: Gospel
BMI
Neighbor Lady: Great indie rock Americana from Georgia.
Home Away
Lemaitre: Electronic happy tunes in the neighborhood of Justice

Oh, damn.  I had forgotten about the pure rock-hard power of that Wilderado song “You Don’t Love Me.”  Go jam that song, its the first one in the playlist up above.  If these guys weren’t playing at stinkin’ 11:30 in the morning, I’d be there in a heartbeat.  Neighbor Lady is also good.  While Sailor Poon has a funny name, that’s about it.  And if you want to do a gospel band, The Relatives are the best of the bunch for the weekend, so this would be your shot.

Oh no, right, I'm going with the kids!  Maybe I'll make it there for Wilderado.

12:15 to 1:00
Honda
Shame: Post-punk London rock that rules.
Kiddie Limits  (12:30)
School of Rock: Kids jamming cover tunes based on what they learned at private lessons
Tito’s Tent
The Texas Gentlemen: Roots rock by a badass backing band out on their own
American Express
Amber Mark: Soul pop and R&B like Norah Jones tried to make modern pop

A little conflicted here, but my weird musical tastes are likely outside the norm.  If you you’re your rock a little harder/punkier, then go Shame.  If you like your rock a little bluesier/Southern-ier, then go Texas Gentlemen.  I think if I went this early, I might actually pick the Gentlemen over Shame, but it would be a hard call.

BMI
The Nude Party:  Goofy name, but tasty countrified rock

The Nude Party is very fun (that’s what she said).  And the other two would be great for a nice sunny afternoon relaxation session with a cold beer in hand.  If I’m there, I think I might get hyped and do Yungblud, but Amen Dunes is also calling my name.

3:00
Miller Lite
Bahamas:   Sweet folky rock that brings Jack Johnson to mind.
Barton Springs
Parquet Courts:   Brooklyn garage rock fully loved by the critics
BMI
Injury Reserve: Arizona rappers with both party and introspective sides.
Home Away
Elle King:   The Ex's and Oh's lady has more scratchy-voiced, country-spiked pop.

It just dawned on me that I get to do both Sundays.  This first Sunday will be with the kids, then next Sunday will be with my buddy.  That changes what I’m going to pick here.  Elle King is likely the most famous of the group, although she is probably the one I would want to see the least.  Parquet Courts’ brand of funky indie rock would probably be my pick if I were left all alone, but I really liked Injury Reserve as well.  And Injury Reserve doesn’t play weekend two.  So, maybe I split up from the family, let them go see the dumb Ex’s and Oh’s song (and maybe that super explicit one she does live), while I go do Injury Reserve by myself this weekend.  Then Parquet next weekend.  This sounds like a good plan.

4:00 – 5:00
Honda
X Ambassadors:   Sweepingly homogeneous alternative rock
Kiddie Limits  (4:30)
Lisa Loeb:   Yes, that Reality Bites Song lady.  But now doing Kiddie Limits songs.
Tito’s Tent
Khruangbin:   Funky instrumental goodness
American Express
Janelle Monae:   Funky, freaky bad ass melting styles into great pop soul grooves.

Janelle Monae is the easy choice in this slot.  I could see an argument for going to see Lisa Loeb, except that she is playing the kiddie stage, and while I’d enjoy hearing “Stay,” I don’t need to hear songs about nutty coconuts.  I also very much love Khruangbin’s funky stuff, but Monae is (or should be) a true star.  I'd like to check that out live.  I don’t want to see the Ambassadors at all, which likely means that both my kids and my buddy are going to demand that one both weekends.  I need to start a smear campaign now.  If I could angle this my own way, I’d do Khruangbin this first weekend and then Monae next weekend, but I might need to suck it up and do Monae twice to guide my kids well.

5:00
Miller Lite
Tinashe:   Strong-voiced hook singer making bad, generic pop R&B
Barton Springs
Houndmouth: Shaggy southern rock goodness.
BMI
Hailey Knox:   Strong-voiced lover of Indie Pop Voice
Home Away
Rezz:   Aggressive electronic "body" music

Easiest decision of the day, I think.  Houndmouth is the only band I want to see of these four.  If only the female hadn't left Houndmouth, then this could have been an all female singer hour.

6:00 or 6:30
Honda
Phoenix: Discofied pop rock Frenchies with that "Lizstomania" song
Tito’s Tent
The Revolution:  Prince's backing band, carrying on without him.
American Express (6:30)
Camila Cabello:  The Fifth Harmony escapee pop star with that "Havana" song.

Honestly, I don’t know who I’m kidding.  With my kids in tow on this evening, we’ll be doing Camila Cabello.  They’ve been talking about this show for weeks.  I’m sort of interested in doing the Revolution, just to yell along with classic Prince songs, but I’ll likely just stay with the family and jam some mega pop.  Also, they have just added in Phoenix, and if they were up against many of the other folks on this Sunday lineup, I would choose them, but I know what the kids want to see, so we'll be jamming to "Havana" while everyone else is getting the mania caused by 19th century Hungarian composers.

Annoyingly, they just recently pushed Cabello back to 6:30, which means that the night is thrown off, because now you can’t get to the 7 o'clock shows when they start, and the headliners are all a little harder to manage.

7:00 or 7:30
Miller Lite
Illenium:  More entirely generic EDM with the usual female singing platitudes
Barton Springs
Shakey Graves:  Excellent local musician and songwriter doing bluesy rock
Home Away (7:30)
Sylvan Esso:  Glitchy-sounding electronic indie pop that weakens after the Get Up Get Down one.

So, if I stay at the whole Cabello show, then I miss half of Shakey Graves.  And if I stay at the whole Graves show, then I miss out on the start of Arctic Monkeys.  So they’re kind of backing me into a corner here.  I don’t want to see either of these other two groups, at all, so I might just end up trying to walk through the crowd at Shakey on the way over to get in place for the Monkeys.  Or just ignore this entire hour...

Since they start 45 minutes apart, you could go listen to 30 minutes of the Monkeys and then trudge all the way over to the other side of the park to catch all of Scott’s set.  That might be the way to do it this first weekend.  My choice, between the two, is easily to go see the Arctic Monkeys.  But since I’m doing both Sundays this time, maybe I plan on AM with my buddy and Scott this weekend?  I dunno.
